As we age, our skin doesn't shed the old, dry, dead skin cells as quickly as when we were younger, unfortunately. To help encourage and accelerate cellular turnover, fruit acids and enzymes (AHA) scrubs and peels work wonders to polish and hydrate mature skin, while gently loosening and dissolving dead skin cells in a non abrasive manner. Below are a Few of My Favorite Exfoliation Treatments:
- Pumpkin Peels - Pumpkin peels are very popular, not only because they smell like fresh baked pumpkin pie, but the skin softening enzymes in the pumpkin slough off and dissolve dead skin cells, while promoting skin repair and decongesting clogged pores. Pumpkin peels work well for mature skin as well as all skin types - especially sundamaged and acne prone skin.
- Papaya Peels - Papaya is especially calming and soothing to the skin. It's very gentle and clarifying to the skin and very effective for lifting away impurites. Best for sensitive and mature skin.
- Apple Peels - The malic acid in apples brighten skin tone and helps to refine pores and even out your complexion. Best for mature skin.
- Cranberry Peels - Cranberries provide powerful antioxidants while stimulating the production of collagen and elastin to firm the skin. Best for mature skin.
- Wild Yam Cream- Wild Yam contains a natural extract that helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles - especially around the eyes, while firming the skin and stimulating collagen and elastin production. Wild yam cream is especially beneficial for dry, mature skin.
If you prefer to use a scrub - stay away from scrubs that contain ground nut hulls and seeds. These ingredients can be too abrasive and can actually damage healthy skin. Look for non-abrasive scrubs that contain jojoba beads or smooth round beads.
Exfoliate once a week for mature skin. Over exfoliating can leave skin dry and damaged. If you find you need a more aggressive peel, seek out a skilled licensed Esthetician.
