Beauty BlundersWhen our skin acts up, we're usually quick to jump to conclusions - it must be stress, or that time of the month, or maybe all that chocolate we indulged in, or that greasy fast food we ate last night - when there's probably a simpler explanation.

          Common Beauty Blunders:

  • You're Stuck in a Skin Care Time Warp - Maybe back in the 80's a dermatologist said you had dry skin - and to steer clear of clay masks.  Still to this day you connect the word mask with drying out your skin.  The truth is your skin type changes due to age, hormones, the environment and can even seasonally. You may need to change your skin care products.
  • So, What's the Answer? - Examine your facial skin very closely - Do you have wrinkles, dryness, ruddiness, blotchiness?  Do you really know what your skin type would be classified as?  If you're not sure Click Here for a free skin care evaluation and check out my article "What's right for my skin."   For an expert skin care evaluation, consult an Esthetician or Dermatologist.

  • You're Still Hanging on to Old Products - The FDA usually doesn't require that cosmetic skin care products have an expiration date and those that do, usually list it on the box, which we have a tendancy to toss out.  The FDA does however require that skin care products with active ingredients, such as the highly effective antioxidant Vit-C, be used within a year.
  • So, What's the Answer? - If you're not sure if the product you're using is still fresh, look for signs of rancidity - such as smell, discoloration or separation of oil.  Rancid products can cause major skin irritation. When in doubt - throw it out!

  • Less is More - Many women tend to go way overboard with anti wrinkle creams or skin care products that are supposed to reverse damage, but ironically, skimp on sunsreen with SPF which is the #1 antiaging skin care product for preventing photo-aging.
  • So, What's the Answer? - If an anti wrinkle cream calls for a dime size amount of the product and you use a quarter's worth, you're risking skin irritation, not to mention wasting the product.  Especially if it's an anti aging skin care product that contains ingredients that exfoliate the skin, such as AHA acids that can be harsh on the skin, when used in excess. Always use the recommended amount for best results!

  • You Expect Immediate Results - We live in a society that expects immediate gratification.  Many women give up on their skin care products because they don't see results quick enough.
  • So, What's the Answer? - You need to be patient!  Especially if you have mature skin and the product has to repair and reverse damage. Those wrinkles and brown age spots didn't come overnight.  It may take up to a month to see improvement - But DO NOT give up, the payoff is worth it!

The Bottom Line - For healthy skin use the right skin care products for your particular skin type and BE CONSISTENT!
