Spring Detox     WELCOME SPRING 2010! 


 


Like so many others, I am glad to say goodbye to a long, cold, dismal Winter! 

Spring is the time of year for renewal!  Signs of Spring are popping up all over... Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and trees are beginning to bud...  

With Spring comes a fresh start to cleanse the body and soul!  After a long Winter of indulging on comfort foods and limited activity... I usually welcome the Spring with a gentle Spring Detox.  A Detox, also known as a Cleanse helps flush out toxins from the body, increasing your energy, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, and with healthy glowing skin!  NOTE: Cellulite which appears on the bodies of over 90% of women, is due in a large part to accumulated toxins, poor blood circulation, and a sluggish lymphatic system.

While the word "Detox" may conjure up visions of fasting and starvation... A Detox usually only lasts a few days and is basically just a way of eating healthier to nourish and reconnect with your body, mind, spirit, and soul!

If you suffer from headaches, frequent colds, fatigue, constipation, indigestion, and post-winter pudge... A good Spring Detox may be just the thing to get you back on track!



Tips to Boost Your Health, Cleanse Your Body of Toxins, and Restore Internal Balance Through Detoxing:
  • Upon awakening, takes a few minutes to stretch and take several slow deep breaths also known as diaphragmatic breathing.  By bringing more oxygen into the body, it promotes blood flow and lymphatic drainage, which is vital for removing toxins from the body.  Also, practice diaphragmatic breathing throughout the day to enhance the effects of the Detox and for overall good health.
  • Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, dairy products, salt, and refined sugar and flour during your Detox.  If you're a coffee drinker, opt for green tea instead.  Green tea (which contains powerful antioxidants) does contain some caffeine, but substantially less than coffee, and unlike coffee... the caffeine is released slowly into the system.  Green tea boasts many anti aging, health, and longevity benefits and has a positive impact on every system in the body including the cardiovascular, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, lymphatic, and immune. 
  • Start out each day with a cup of warm lemon water.  Just squeeze half a lemon into an 8 oz. glass of warm water.  DO NOT use sugar!  Warm lemon water stimulates the liver and aids in the digestion process while eliminating constipation.
  • Drink a MINIMUM of 6-8 glasses of water daily during a Detox to rev up your metabolism, hydrate the body, flush out toxins, and restore health.  Drinking an adequate amount of water is especially vital while Detoxing as it not only assists in removing harmful toxins and waste from the body, but drinking water helps carry nutrients into every cell of the body, aids in maintaining digestive health, and stimulates fat loss. 

  • Eat 6 Small Healthy High Fiber Meals throughout the day that consists of:

           ~    Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (preferably organic) 

           ~    Fresh Fish such as Salmon and Tuna

           ~    Legumes and Beans

           ~    Whole Grains

           ~    Unsalted Nuts and Seeds

          ~    Fresh Herbs and Spices

           ~    Herbal Teas

      NOTE:  Eat NO processed foods!  The more natural the diet, the better!

  • Take Nutrition and Herbal Supplements such as a full-spectrum, high potency multi-vitamin with minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and milk thistle to enhance liver function.

  • Take a 30 minute walk daily, preferably outdoors to get some fresh air and a daily dose of Vitamin-D from the sun.  Exercise is an excellent way to rid your body of toxins through the skin, by sweating.  Also, sitting in a sauna is an excellent way to cleanse the body and detoxify during a Detox and has the same effect, helping to dispel impurities through the pores.  NOTE:  It's important to shower after exercising or sitting in a sauna, to wash off the toxins that are left on the skin.

  • Meditate for 5-15 minutes daily to lower your stress levels.  Meditation when practiced daily releases negative energy within your body and mind, which results in healing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

  • Start Juicing!!!  If you don't own a juicer - it's not mandatory to go out and buy one during a detox... but you may just want to, as the health and anti aging benefits are many!  Besides providing more nutrition than sugar-laden store bought varieties, fresh homemade juices help to cleanse the body of toxins, boost the immune system, while promoting health, healing, and energy. 

 

The length of time a Cleansing Diet (or) Detox is maintained, is based on your own individual needs.  A cleanse can last from 1 - 10 days or more. Typically 3-5 days is sufficient time to reap the numerous rewards and benefits of Detoxing.  Many people opt to do a Detox seasonally, others just once or twice a year.  If you're not processing foods and eliminating waste properly... an internal cleanse may be just what your body craves.

NOTE:  While Detoxing, the first couple of days you may experience some mild side effects... Headaches are one of the most common, often due to caffeine withdrawal.  Diarrhea, fatigue, or irritability may also be experienced while ridding the body of toxins.  These side effects, while annoying, are actually a good thing, and usually pass quickly.  Within a few days of detoxing, people often notice they have more energy, improved digestion, increased mental awareness, regular bowel movements, clearer skin, cellulite reduction, as well as an overall feeling of good health.  Not to mention one of the best side effects of all... Weight loss!!!
