Pilates (pronounced: puh-lah-teez) and originally called Contrology, is a therapeutic, body-conditioning series of exercises that are designed to tone, build strength, flexibility, balance, and inner awareness while realigning the body.
Developed by German-born Joseph Pilates ... Pilates was a small, frail, sickly child who was determined to overcome his physical disadvantages. He began to study and self-educate himself in anatomy, body building, wrestling, gymnastics, martial arts, and yoga. During World I Pilates was serving as an orderly and became involved with the treatment and rehabilitation of patients who were disabled and immobile. This was where the exercise system of Pilates was born.
Core stability exercises are a vital part of Pilates. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen, back, pelvic floor and hips. When the core muscles are strong, they work in tandem with the superficial muscles of the trunk. As you develop core strength, your posture will improve and you will develop stability throughout your entire torso.
These (6) Pilates Principles are an Essential Component in a Pilates Workout:
- Centering - Physically Bringing the Focus to the Center of the Body (Powerhouse)
- Concentration - Every Movement Require Focused Thought and Direction
- Flow - All Exercises are Performed in a Continuous Flowing, Fluid, Graceful Manner
- Control - All Exercises are Performed with Complete Muscular Control
- Breath - Oxygenates the Entire Body while Cleansing it of Impurities
- Precision - Every Exercise is Directed to Ensure Maximum Efficiency of Movement and Energy
The most popular form of Pilates is mat-based Pilates. This is a series of exercises performed on the floor using gravity and your own body weight to provide the resistance. Equipment-based Pilates uses specific equipment such as the "Reformer" which resembles a rowing machine. Like some other forms of exercise, Pilates does not require a lot of repetitions. Instead Pilates emphasizes performing each exercise fully with focus and precision, therefore obtaining significant results in a shorter period of time.
